Long time readers will remember how my plans for a homebirth with my first child were interrupted by a necessary induction due to a diagnosis of Cholestasis (ICP).
Saddened by the loss of my “ideal birth” and scared for the safety of my baby, not to mention the unbearable itching that is a symptom of cholestasis; I wondered if I should ever get pregnant again. (ICP has a 70% recurrence chance)
We wanted more babies though and now, a year after my first made it safely into the world we are expecting another baby in Feb. but the worries are still there.
Already at 17 weeks I’ve noticed the beginnings of an itch on my palms. My feet are hot and dry at night and in the morning my palms itch for a few minutes. Exact same as what happened last time. Only last time I had no clue that my liver wasn’t functioning normally or that my baby could be in danger.
I cannot begin to explain the thoughts and emotions that go through my head each day.
There is no cure for ICP, typically once baby is born the mom’s liver functions returns to normal. With an ICP diagnosis the only medical option is a drug called URSO that has an excellent track record of keeping baby safe and resulting in a live birth (typically induced at 27 weeks).
I am personally against drugs and anything other than a natural birth, so this one is really hard for me. Ultimately I will do whatever it takes to keep my baby safe. Crazy how much I love this little bean and I’ve only known about him/her for 17 weeks!
BUT. I’m not one to sit back and let things happen. I am being proactive about protecting my baby naturally first.
Here is what I know (simplified): With ICP, my liver is not functioning properly. It isn’t dumping the bile acids as it should, but rather sending them back out into the body. This stresses an already poorly functioning liver, right along with every other system in my body.
While there is no known cure, I believe that naturally supporting my liver can make a huge difference. (ex. last time the itching was much less while I continued to eat whole foods, convenience or fast foods made my symptoms worse)
Cholestasis of Pregnancy with NOT Control Me
If my liver is unable to handle the toxins currently in my body, the first logical step is to limit the amount that goes in on a daily basis.
Practically speaking this means:
- Limiting the toxins in my food. Eating foods that are organic or sustainably raised. Avoiding preservatives and additives. Cooking from scratch and even figuring out how to replace the few things I still buy such as condiments etc.
- Limiting the toxins in my personal care supplies. I want to be clean, but I’m careful what I buy. I’ve been careful for years, but as more and more people are looking for clean products, they are becoming easier to find and the ingredients are getting better too.
- Limiting the toxins that are used to clean my home. Essential oils and vinegar work great for many things, while natural dish and laundry soaps are becoming better and easier to find.
You’ve all heard me talking about the Healthy Living Bundle and why I’m so excited to offer it too you (hello! over $2,000 in eBooks, eCourses, Memberships and bonuses for only $29.97!) But I’ve never shared why I’m so thankful to have a bundle for my own personal use.
You guys, if I’ve learned nothing else through having ICP, I have learned that good health is the most valuable thing a person owns.
With good health, one can overcome adversity of nearly any kind. But if you don’t have good health, if you are constantly tired, worn down, and sick, you will also lose mental health; and if you loose mental health, you could very well lose anything else of value that you consider yours.
Since I believe good health starts with the food we eat, I’m passionate about cooking healthy foods for my family and that’s why the Real Foods portion of the bundle is exciting to me. I’m always looking for more ways to simplify my cooking, while still serving up healthy, delicious meals.
Having a healthy (as possible) pregnancy and then giving my babies the very best care I can after they are born is also important to me. I don’t want to be the mom that freaks out over every cough or fever, I want to be informed and learn what I can do for my babies to both keep them healthy and naturally treat them when they do get sick. That’s why the Healthy Kids section of the this bundle appeals so strongly to me. I’m particularly looking forward to reading a book in this section titled “Go Diaper Free” as it focuses on learning your baby’s signs and signals for needing relief rather than just letting them go in a diaper. The Natural Home section is exciting to me as it contains several different books with hundreds of recipes for making your own personal care and cleaning stuff. Since limiting the toxins around me is part of my goal that cholestasis of pregnancy will not control me these books and this info is looking really good to me right now! Both the Natural Remedies and the Essential Oil categories are really appealing to me as well. Knowing what my natural options are, and how to use them is really important to me. Whether I’m reducing inflammation, bringing gut flora into balance, treating fevers, or making herbal medicines, this bundle has so much to offer. (Diabetes, PCOS, Morning Sickness, Fertility and Cleansing are also included.) Those 5 sections of the healthy living bundle, are the 5 I’m most excited about. But there are also 4 other sections that contain good information. That information just isn’t quite as relevant to me. I know many of you have already grabbed your bundle and I would love to know which section(s) you are most excited for!
