HomeMade Tortillas!

Back in January, I read something about making your own tortillas, and it sounded so good I decided to try it. I found a recipe and mixed it up according to directions and tried to roll the dough out flat and cook it on a griddle. While I am sure that a Mexican would have no problem at all making tortillas that way I really struggled.

Let me go off topic a bit: I won’t torture you with the details but hubby had literally told me to buy my own Christmas present this year and it hadn’t gone over well at all with me, so I had decided I just wouldn’t get a gift this year.  However the more I tried, and failed :) at getting these tortillas to roll out nice and round and then cooked, the more I wanted a tortilla maker. So I caved in and “bought my own Christmas present”.

Here is what I bought: Chef Pro 10 Inch Tortilla Maker

So excited to have my own tortilla maker I went to work again and would you know? They turned out so much better!  The next thing I wanted to do was make tortillas that were a little healthier for you. I don’t like all whole wheat as I find them very heavy but I wanted them at least half and half.

In the bowl are 1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour and 2 cups of unbleached all purpose flour.    Then I have a 8 Tbs. of coconut oil, plus 1 teas. of salt and 1/4 teas. of baking powder.

All in the bowl now ready to be mixed.

Once the mixture looks like this, it is time to slowly add 3/4 cup of warm water.

Dough will be a bit sticky but that is good.

Time to kneed the dough, I do this by hand for 3-5 min or until dough is very soft and pliable.

Now that the dough is soft and smooth, it’s time to let the dough “rest”, it needs to rest at least 30 min.

Wet a paper towel and wrap it securely around the dough, so the dough does not dry out.

Next it’s time to make your dough into balls.

1 1/2 inch dough balls

Dough ball inserted and pressed for about a second then flipped. Looking good eh?

I love how fat and puffy these things get!

Taaa Daaaa!!! This is about half of them :)

Hubby puts lunch meat and cheese in these things and rolls them up for his lunches, he says they are way better than the ones you buy at the store!  Now it’s time for me to try making chips with my tortilla maker!

  4. oooh those look so yummy!! my nana makes homemade tortillas and she has never went by a recipe lol. I asked her to teach me years ago and she said, oh add a pinch of salt and a pinch of that hahahah. They are def better than store bought BUT if you had to buy store bought, la la’s tortillas are good. I like that you added whole wheat flour, a lil more healthy! :)

I have made corn tortillas using a large ziploc bag, rolling pin and electric skillet. I use Maseca. It’s an instant masa flour found in the Mexican section. You only need to add water and salt. The tortilla maker makes it look so much easier:)

  6. Hi Kendra! So proud of you for making the effort to make your own tortillas! I’ve seen tortilla makers before but one that little…never. I’ve been making homemade tortillas for many years thanks to my precious mother’s instructions. No recipe, “just watch and learn” as she used to say. We use a cast iron griddle and the heat has to be adjusted just right to get the perfect tortilla. I make mine much like yours, except I use a heart healthy butter to go with my hubby’s heart healthy diet.

  7. I told you about that movie because you were giving away a movie and liked history! I have been featured at http://jillshomeremedies.blogspot.com/2012/09/natural-living-link-up_12.html
I loved this post. Have made some before. do come and see my recipes!
