Freezing Cherries

Back in April I blogged about how easy it is to freeze strawberries. Today I am talking about Bing Cherries.

Have you ever noticed that certain fruits taste like the season they are ripe in? For instance, strawberries definitely taste like spring. Peaches and cherries taste like summer; those really tart apples taste like fall, and pomegranates taste like winter.

When you freeze fruits you can pull them out of the freezer in the winter time and taste a different season.

Cherries are very easy to freeze. I’m talking about the sweet cherries, not the tart, pie cherries. Pie cherries need a little more work.

I found Bing Cherries on sale (but of course!) at the store and bought several bags.  I cleaned out my kitchen sinks and ran cold water into both sides. Then I dumped the bags of cherries in one side.

Then I pulled off the stems, picked out the yucky cherries, and put the good ones in the other side.

In this sink I gently swished them around just to get them as clean as I could. Then I put them on a towel to dry.

Of course they wouldn’t completely dry, but I let them sit for about 30 minutes, and then put them into bags.

Put the date on the bags and pop them in the freezer.  Now, sometime this winter, I can pull out a bag and pop a little bit of summer in my mouth. Spitting out the seed though. 😉

What fruits make you think of summer?

I have been known to link up to these totally cool and awesome linky parties! Why don’t you see which ones you can link up with today?

I have never thought about freezing fruits other than grapes! This is a great idea! (though we eat frozen grapes during the summer…cut one in half for a teething baby!)

Good idea, as my husband is a victim of Gout & he loves cherries for a natural preventative food. Works great! I will definitely be using this for future reference, thanks!! We like to freeze Blueberries, becasue when not in season, they are EXTREMELY expensive and both our little princesses LOVE blueberries! 🙂

I feel the same way about fruit. I look forward to summer for the cherries, melons, and tomatoes, and nothing tastes like fresh.
Thanks for the tip, I did not know you could freeze cherries.

A cute saving idea is to use a 11″ bag by abut3.5″. Place about 9 big bing cherries all in a row (that is about all that will fit in), then vac and seal. Makes a not too many for a snack for one. The stick can be thawed in water quickly. This way you don’t have more thawed than you need to eat at a time. To make a share pack, make the bag longer and put in a double row.

While that is a totally adorable idea, you forget that I don’t have a vacuum sealer. 🙂

I love freezing produce to use later on in the year! I actually did a post about it a couple months ago as well 🙂 But never thought to freeze cherries! Will definitely be doing this later this week.

Thanks for sharing at Tiny Tip Tuesday!

Awesome! We freeze berries all the time, but mostly because we’re so bad about eating them that they’ll go bad in the fridge if we don’t 🙂 Thanks for sharing at The Fun In Functional!

So, these turn out ok even with the pit in them? You just thaw them out when you are ready to eat? I like the idea of not having to pit the cherries, but I’m curious how they taste.

They taste amazing! Don’t let them thaw completely or they have a mushy texture. Let them thaw until they are chewable but still a bit icy. The flavor is actually sweeter than that of a fresh cherry!

I bought and OXO Grip cherry pitter and it worked great. Then froze the cherries and no longer have to worry about the pit. Can even grab some for a smoothie!

THANKS FOR THE INFO ABOUT FREEZING CHERRIES. MY SISTER HAD JUST BOUGHT A BAG AND BECAUSE SHE IS HAVING A MEDICAL PROCEDURE, SHE CANNOT EAT THEM RIGHT NOW. SHE WAS GOING TO GIVE THEM TO ME, BUT I WANTED TO SEE IF I COULD FIND OUT IF THEY CAN BE FROZEN. GOOD TO KNOW AND THEN SHE CAN ENJOY THEM LATER.
