Since I’ve started on this juice fast, I’ve been going through a lot of fruits and vegetables using my juicer
. So today I thought I would share how I keep my greens fresh longer.

How to Keep Greens Fresh Longer:

How to keep greens fresh longer. #fresh #greens

I can go through a bunch of spinach in one day. A bunch of kale disappears in about 5 days. Even though we can literally walk to Meijer, I didn’t want to be running to the store every 2nd day. So I go every 5 days and buy 6 bunches of spinach, a big bunch of kale and other stuff like fennel, mint, cabbage, pears, carrots and more.

Some stuff is easy, carrots and celery go into a drawer. Cabbage goes in a bag on the shelf. But I was left with the task of figuring out how to keep greens fresh longer.

It’s pretty easy. when you bag your greens at the store, put them into the bag, stems first. At my store the greens are misted every minute so the greens are wet when I bag them.

At home, I fold the bag part way back so the tops of the greens are exposed. If the greens are not wet from the store, make sure you put some water in the bottom of the bag where the stems are. If the stems are not wet, the leaves will wilt. If you don’t expose the tops of the greens, they will mold. (learned the hard way)

Fresh Kale

The I put the my greens in the fridge. Stem ends in first, tops exposed to the front.

Here is where the “star” of the show comes in. A simple spray bottle set on mist. I simply mist the tops of them twice a day and it really helps me keep greens fresh longer. In fact, my last bunch of kale stayed nice for over a week!

So glad I can keep my greens fresh longer and not have to make as many grocery trips!

Respectful opinions are always welcome

  1. Wow, I never would have thought of that.

  2. Cool Beans!!!
I started juicing very slowly. I am having juice before work, and for my snack before dinner.
I usually have candy or chips before, since I eat my dinner at work, snack machines are everywhere!!!
I am hoping the to gradually work my way to 2 a day.
I checked out….and found deeeelish smoothies and juices.
Today I had spinich, kael, strawberries, mango, honey. Crushed ice and a bit of water. Yummy.

  3. Hmmm, that is interesting. Normally kale will stay good for 2-3 weeks just in a plastic bag in the crisper (or at least it does for me) =/
I would have NEVER thought to mist produce. Your genius. I do wash and chop romaine and store into a sealed container as soon as I get home from the store and it too stays good for about 7-10 days.

    • You know what? I bet Kale would stay nice that long. Our fridge tends to freeze things in the crisper, so I never even considered it for a newer fridge. Good call. :) Kale does stay nice awhile on it’s own. The spinach is another story. Misting really helps it. :)

Great to know this! Will definitely use this idea. On another note, kale is not my friend. I have tried many ways to eat it but it just tastes bitter! I’ve tried kale chips and in the blender with other things. I know it’s so good for you that I try to like it but hmm, wonder if there are any good recipes I’m missing out on out there?

    • You know what? I find it rather bitter too. But I’m always careful to “hide it” in stuff. If I make a 30oz juice, I only add maybe 6 leaves to it.
Another thing is, the stem. Cut most of the stem off before you add it to stuff. That’s where most of the bitter taste comes from.

This is good to know. I will have to try hiding it then! Maybe my mistake is making it the main taste, as in the chips. They were on Pinterest and I thought yum! But no go. Thanks for the advice. ( :

  5. Oh my gosh…that is true genius.

I haven’t been on for awhile and didn’t realize that you were back juicing. I need to get caught up on things, I see.
