Today Jane from Mary and Martha is sharing something interesting with us. So tell us Jane, what is an Ampersand and where did it come from?

What is an Ampersand and what do they mean?

What is an Ampersand, with Jane from Mary & Martha!

If you are on the internet at all, you will notice a new trend, that of the Ampersand!  Ampersand’s are popping up in home decor, cards and wall hangings.  It bothers me when people use the + sign when they should use the & sign!  Remember the tree carvings?   John & Charlotte means so much more than John + Charlotte!

What is an Ampersand?

An Ampersand symbol is the & symbol that can be traced the whole way back to Roman cursive writing!   In fact, at one point the Ampersand symbol was part of our alphabet!  Check it out here on dictionary.com.

We all use ampersand’s alot, some of my favorites are Steve & Jane, Peanut Butter & Choclate and of course Mary & Martha.

My ultimate favorite is Jesus & Me, which reminds me that Jesus is with me wherever I go; so long as I choose to continue walking with Him!

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.  Joshua 1:9

Check out some of the Ampersand Home Decor that Mary & Martha carries!   Mary & Martha is part of Dayspring and each piece is inscribed with Scripture or a Inspirational verse.   Make Jesus ALIVE in your home by putting His words on your walls and on your table!

  1. This reminded me of when I first started doing legal dictation 15 years ago and the attorney would dictate to type ampersands. For instance if he wanted me to type “Smith & Jones”, he would say “Smith ampersand Jones”. Before that I didn’t know that was the proper name for the “&” symbol. Thankfully I figured it out quickly and did not embarrass myself by thinking there was another law firm around called Smith Ampersand Jones. :)

    • At least you figured it out :)
Although your example made me think of how kids now-days don’t understand why old phones have the # sign. “the hashtag wasn’t even used then” lol!!!
