1930’s Home Tour – A Peek at Our Dream Home

Hello! I did not forget my promise to post a home tour of our new (to us) home. We may have already lived here for a year, but it’s still hard to believe that after years of hard work and saving, we have our dream home!

If you missed the story of how God brought everything together perfectly for us to buy this place, you may enjoy reading the story of how we found our dream home.

According to county records, our home was built in 1935 and it’s definitely got some quirks. But as Jason and I are pretty quirky ourselves, the house suits us perfectly!

So let’s get started! Here’s the house as you are pulling in our drive.

The drive leads up to a 2 car garage that still needs some work but we can park in there and that’s very nice.

Off by itself is another single car garage that is pretty nice and we use it for storage, lawnmower, and other stuff.

Directly behind our 2 car garage is a small barn that definitely needs work and hopefully soon will become home to chickens.

Our property is just over 6 acres, most of which is overgrown with trees and underbrush. It’s a work in progress, but how fun for our growing boys!

We are fencing in a small section of our backyard. It’s taking a while since Jason is doing it himself between everything else that needs to be done around here.

This is looking south out of my kitchen window. Our property extends to just past the large pine you see and then quite a ways to the East. This photo was taken in June, so you can see our garden on the east side. Next year, Jason plans to double its size!

Welcome to my kitchen! As you walk in the back door, this is the view you see. Large and roomy!

Lots of room to move around in this kitchen πŸ™‚

Standing in my kitchen looking towards the door we entered at. The flash of yellow you see is the stairwell leading to the basement (more on that later). Let’s go through the door on the right side of the photo to our dining room.

Another nice open room. We can stretch the table out in there to seat 16 to 18 people!

Old homes feature “built-ins” and this one is no different. The bottom is a tilt-out desk, we just use it for storage of table cloths and napkins for now. The drawers are empty except for the boy’s colored papers.

Here, I’m standing by the table looking back into the kitchen.

1930's home tour
Standing in the dining room looking into the living room and further into the front room.

The start of my gallery wall. On the right side is the opening to the stair-well, office, and bathroom.

Our “front room” which is supposed to be more of a “quiet space” but with boys in the house, a quiet space doesn’t exist.

If I take the boy’s photos inside, I take them in this room because of the abundance of natural lighting!

We put the bookshelves Jason made me in here as well.

And my piano! I’ve wanted a piano for years and love having one now. I just wish I knew a bit more about how to play it.

Let’s pop into the office real quick. On our way there, you see our downstairs bathroom. It’s rather awkward in that if you really want privacy, you’ll need to shut the (white) office door instead of the (grey) bi-fold door. You can see right through the center gap of the bathroom door!

This room tends to be a bit of a mess much of the time. There’s a small deck out this door but kind of pointless and the door isn’t the nicest so we rarely use it.

The “other” office view.

Let’s go upstairs. We love how wide these steps are. A rarity in older homes for sure!

As you reach the top of the steps and turn to enter the upstairs, this is your view. Right into the bathroom lol!
You can see the boy’s door open on the right. Let’s peek in there.

Looking in the doorway.

I love the animals on the walls in here. By the giraffe and closet frame, we have markings where we measured each boy this past Jan and plan to do so each year.

There are a number of things we are planning to do in this room, but kind of just waiting right now, as they are still pretty young.
The older 2 boys (3 and 5) both still sleep on crib-sized mattresses in this bunk bed so it looks rather small in the room. I know as they grow, the room will likely shrink a bit!

The one thing we did do was replace the bare bulb twist on fixture on the wall with this.
We had a few logs milled awhile back and this was a slice from an old cedar that stood dead for years before Jason dropped it. It makes the neatest light don’t you think?

Back in the hallway, this is looking towards the top landing of the stairs.

I love these built-in cabinets. Nice and roomy, with plenty of storage space! Directly across from these cupboards is Jason and I’s room.

I’m not going to lie. Aside from the kitchen, this is probably my favorite room. It’s quirky with the dormers and all, but I love it!

How about that quilt? Homemade by my MIL and such a perfect summer spread for this room!

I needed a mirror above my dresser and figured out how to get one there. Mounted it right to the wall. In all honesty, it may be quite the trick to get it off the wall. Haha!

There are 2 odd closets in this room. Different, but nice to have!

Just a quick peek into the bathroom. It’s certainly odd, but it’s working for us πŸ™‚

Now we are headed down to the basement. I’ve since painted the yellow stairwell top and white block bottom of the stairwell a nice shade of blue. It hides the dirt better and is washable!

Turning at the bottom of the steps, you can see my laundry area (that laundry table is always covered with everything but laundry lol). The door that’s mostly closed is hiding a cluttered utility room. On the to-do list, this winter is getting shelves in there.

Standing in front of the dryer looking towards the side you see coming down the steps. The coat wall is a project I did over the summer. More canning shelves will go over there in the future.

The second (newer) section of the basement. The nice-looking floor is a bit deceiving. It needs to be pulled up and both basement floors need either a good paint job or epoxy but that will be awhile. Thanks to the low heat ducts, this room cannot be finished and taller people are going to have a difficult time walking in here.

The other side of the lower basement. This is kind of my project side, and where I paint from time to time.

And that’s it! Our new home in lots of photos.

As you read, we have lots of projects planned for the place, but as with all good things, they take time. πŸ™‚ And older homes have lots of projects and ways to suck time and money right out of ya. Ha-ha!

What do you think? Quirky (we think so)? And what was YOUR favorite room or feature of our dream place?

Our toilet has a bifold door, as well and we had the same privacy issue until one of my boys had an inspiration. He simply put a length of weatherstripping down the crack and that solved the problem!

Your home is just beautiful! I love the quirkiness. It gives it character. I grew up in Dayton, OH, not too far from you! Seeing your home reminded me of the houses I remember from my childhood. You all are doing a great job of making it your own. Thanks so much for sharing the photos! I love seeing the inside of people’s homes, too!! It was a pleasure visiting with you. πŸ™‚

its a great house that allows you to change it as your family needs change. Such a nice change to see a house (similar to mine) not perfect but it is neat and tidy and evolves as you need it to.

As you might realize, I’m also not a rich person to just change it all in a day. We’ve been here 25 years and its 50 years old and we just now replaced the original toilets. We are so excited!!!

Thanks, Barbara πŸ™‚ We love it, it’s cozy but has room. And I should definitely clarify that we try to be tidy but with 3 littles (1, 3, and 5) it’s rarely tidy during the day. The 1-year-old drags stuff everywhere and I just ignore it until he’s in bed πŸ™‚

And I get the excitement over a toilet. Jason discovered our upstairs toilet is over 20 years old. It explains a lot about how it’s harder to keep the bowl clean than the newer downstairs one. Little changes here and there are how we do things as well. It’s okay to not be rich, we appreciate things more <3

You have a lovely home as is – but also a lot of potential for anything you may want to do both inside and out! Very nice!

Lol! Well, I’m happiest when I’m planning, starting and then finishing projects and considering the number of projects this old house offers us, I’d say you are right about people being happier hahaha!
