While in the Keys we made sure to hit the beach and while there, we also collected shells. Today I’m sharing how I made a beach vacation shadow box!
Ah yes, it looks so nice doesn’t it?! 🙂
What you will need:
Beach Vacation Shadow Box
A shadow box
Photos
Paper
Glue
Shells
Sand
Anything else that you may have picked up while on vacation and want to add.
So for my vacation shadow box I went to Hobby Lobby to see how much they would cost. Thinking maybe I would make my own box if they were to expensive. Well, as it turns out, the boxes they had were 50% off at the time so I just bought one. I didn’t think I could make it any cheaper.
The color was a weird like green, that the photo doesn’t show at all. But no problem there, I distressed it just like I did this frame. Nice huh?
Step two would be to gather up everything available for use in the shadow box.
Once you have your supplies, it’s time to start placing. I laid everything out before I glued. A mixture of hot glue and tacky glue was used to hold the shells and such in place.
Next it’s time to work on the back. I decided to only use one photo and I matted it with scrap-booking paper. 🙂 But, you can use several photos and make it a collage if you want to. The lighting washed out the paper so you cannot hardly see the colors, but I used green, peach, and blue to matte with.
Keeping the shadow box lying on its face, I poured 1/2 cup of sand inside, along the bottom. Then I put in some small shells also. Taped the backing to the back of the box and shut it. Voila!
My mom has a vinyl cutter and she cut the words Florida Keys 2013 in white vinyl, which finished the look wonderfully.
I love the way my box turned out! My bathroom already have an ocean theme with the colors I have chosen and the shells I put up. Now, this box just ties it all in and well, makes me smile every time I enter the bathroom! Yes, I know that sounds bad lol.
Have you ever made a vacation shadow box?

This is great! I especially love the way it coordinates with your bathroom. This would also be great using a Scripture verse and miniatures to reinforce the point. Hmmm…now you’ve got my creative juices flowing! I followed you here via Hearts for Home and am now your newest follower.
Cheryl!!! I have followed your blog for months and love it! In fact…. I just read your book Tugboat and after checking out the juicing site I have decided to do the 15 day reboot start this Sunday. 🙂 I’m going to be blogging about it twice a week as well.
I have not done a vacation one but I do one for couples in our church when they get married using the colors of their wedding and their invitation. Invitations usually get thrown away so I use the one the couple sends out to make a shadow box and give it to them at their bridal shower as a keepsake. They are very well received and I feel good knowing that those expensive invites are not just thrown in the garbage.
What a wonderful gift! I’m sure the couples really appreciate your thoughtfulness 🙂
Oh I Love that,it turned out GREAT!
Beautiful! I’ve never tackled a shadow box. I might do one with mementos from when my kids were babies.
Thanks for linking up at Fabulously Frugal Thursday. Off to pin your post!
This is adorable! I have never made a vacation shadow box, but my husband and I are planning a trip to Michigan this summer, which might be the perfect time to try to make one! My mom had a shadow box with my wedding bouquet, invitation, and engagement picture made for us as a gift and they are such wonderful keepsakes!
I have never made a vacation shadow box! What a terrific idea! I love yours, with the sand in it, it’s so sharp! By the way, your comment about entering the bathroom with a smile on your face made me laugh, and the next thing that came to my mind is hopefully you have another smile on your face when you leave, lol! Oh, I’m bad!!
Great job! It looks really nice and is a nice way to remember your fun time. I may have to do something like this , as I think I have sand and I know I have shells and stones from some places we went to in the past. I will pin this 🙂
I love this. I think I might do some with my kids for some of their little boy treasures.
What a wonderful idea, I love it!
Your shadow box is beautiful, a great way to remember a special occasion.
