I don’t know about you, but I love bagels. Cinnamon raisin to be exact and that’s why I am sharing my cinnamon raisin bagel recipe with you today!
Bagels can seem like a lot of work, first mixing the dough, then letting it raise, beating it down, forming the bagels, boiling the bagels and finally baking them. Okay, so they aren’t as easy as making bread. But honestly? From start to finish (and I grind my own flour), not counting raising and baking time, it took me less than 45 minutes total.
I know from expirience that the more you make something, the faster you become. I have a pretty good idea that in time it will only take me 30 minutes or less to make my bagels.
So, time consuming factor out of the way, why bother making your own bagels? Well, let’s see:
- You are in charge of the ingredients and can choose higher quality.
- Made with whole grains, these are far better for you.
- No names on the ingredient list that you don’t understand.
- No preservatives.
- Very inexpensive.

Wow thats awesome you can make your own bagels. 🙂
I have tried making bagels before, and I seem to deflate them when moving to the boiling pot! What’s your secret? My family LOVES bagels, and they taste good, just flat! Looking forward to your help.
Are they deflating IN the pot, or when you move them out? They should not be raised when you put them in. I punch my dough down, form the bagels, let sit for 5 min and plop them in the water.
Sometimes depending on the weather, my bagels will fall when I get them out, so I have to adjust my boiling time. But that’s usually it.
I think I just need to try your recipe! Mine says let them rise for 30 min before putting them in the water. Have you tried other variations, such as plain, sesame seed, etc?
Once I mixed up a cinnamon sugar blend and sprinkled on them right after I pulled them out of the water. They were good, but more like a treat than just a bagel 🙂
These look beautiful! I’ve recently started making my own bread… but I always thought bagels would be too hard. If I need them myself do you think it would take a long time? 15 minutes in the mixer is quite a bit!
I really do not know. I’ve always used my mixer to kneed the bread. 15 minutes seemed to be what worked for me, but it may be about the same by hand. I just set the mixer on low for the kneeding process.
And to be honest, that’s the lazy way to do it, kneeding by hand is considered better. But for this dough I dislike hand kneeding because it’s rather sticky at first.
Hopefully that helps a little.
Thank you! 🙂
