Easy Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

A family favorite growing up and one of Jason’s favorites now would be my easy shepherd’s pie recipe. This is a meal that can be in the oven within 30 – 45 minutes and doesn’t last for long. 🙂

Easy Shepherd's Pie Recipe

Easy Shepherd’s Pie Recipe:

  • Approx. 8 cups of mashed potatoes, salted, peppered and buttered to taste.
  • 1# hamburger
  • 1 quart of green beans
  • 1/2 medium onion chopped
  • Mushroom sauce (recipe below)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese

Start by getting your potatoes on. You can use instant or real. The 8 cups is an approximate measure, but usually 8 medium potatoes is about right.

For your mushroom sauce you will need:

  • 3T Butter
  • 3T flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup dry, mushrooms, Or 1/2 cup sliced fresh mushrooms, Or small can of mushrooms.
  • 1/4 teas. celery powder
  • 1/4 teas. onion powder
  • 1/4 teas garlic powder
  • 1 teas. salt.

Melt butter on medium high heat, then stir in flour. Add in mushrooms and seasoning, stir well. Pour milk over it all and heat until thickened and bubbly.

Brown your hamburger and onion together, drain off grease. Stir in your mushroom sauce.

Mash your potatoes and season to taste.

Drain your green beans and lightly press them into the bottom of a 9×13 pan. Spoon the hamburger sauce mixture over the green beans.  Spread your mashed potatoes over top of that and sprinkle cheese on the mashed potatoes.

This will fill the pan clear full. If you have a lot more than 8 cups of potatoes, you may not want to put them all on. Bubbled over casserole isn’t exactly what you want in your oven. 🙂

Bake at 350 for 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the edges are bubbly. This is also a great make-ahead meal, however, be for-warned that once you put it in the fridge, it will take close to an hour to warm. This is due to the potatoes taking a long time to get hot in the oven.

Another tip, when you go to reheat leftovers (assuming there are some) if you are just warming enough for 2 or 3 people, you can put it in a pan with a bit of water, turn the head to med low and cover. It will be warm within 5-10 minutes. 🙂

I know my Easy Shepherd’s pie recipe is a bit different than what many others are like, but this is one dish that the whole family loves, even when my brothers were toddlers they liked it!

Looks yummy! I definitely want to try this one.

I’ve been wanting to find a replacement for the cans of cream of mushroom soup in some recipes. I think I might try this mushroom sauce recipe. Have you ever done that?

Actually, the original recipe did call for mushroom soup. 🙂 I refuse to use any of that stuff though, so in answer to your question, my mushroom sauce recipe works great!

I love Shepherds pie because you can always use different veggies in it. Also if I don’t have everything for the cream of mushroom gravy I chop up onion and cook it with the hamburger.
