Ah the good times… hanging out with friends and doing crazy stuff, worshiping the Lord, or just hanging out enjoying each others company.
Proverbs 17:17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
“Friends” I once read, “are the family you choose”.
I have a sister-friend. We started hanging out together nearly every weekend the summer I was 18. She would get off work and drive straight to the farm. Generally her arrival went something like this. She would walk into the house and head straight for the pantry and grab a pack of crackers. Then she raided the fridge for a glass of raw milk. Finally with snack in hand she would find me. 🙂
To this day, we are “sisters” and my parents are hers and my siblings are also hers. 🙂 She is aunt ‘nae to my son as well.
The term friends can be over-used or over rated at times. I will honestly say I have lots of acquaintances, however, I only have a few close friends. My acquaintances are the ones I say hi to on the streets and talk to at church, but my friends are the ones I call when I really need something.
I’ve learned that one doesn’t need lots of good friends. One needs lots of acquaintances and just a couple close friends. I am so thankful to have a couple friends like that.
Many who do not have close families are blessed with close friends and those become family, just like my sister-friend is my family too.
Friendships take work, they can be messy, and just like when you can call them up in a time of need, they will need you at times too. Enjoy your acquaintances, but take the time to cultivate a few close friends as well. True friends are a wonderful blessing, and to have one, you must be one.
Do you have a close friend that you know you can always count on even if they don’t live near by?
