Ever wanted to get rid of that canned mushroom soup with all the msg and junk that’s in it, but don’t know how to make mushroom soup? Today, I will show you just that!

In a recent post where I shared my recipe for Shepherd’s Pie, I gave a simple recipe for mushroom sauce. When a reader asked if that could be used in place of Mushroom soup for other recipes, I had to laugh. That’s exactly what it is. When a recipe called for mushroom soup, I made a mushroom sauce of my own instead.

So, just in case you were wondering,

How to make Mushroom Soup, an easy all natural recipe. You will never buy the canned stuff again!!!

Here’s How to Make Mushroom Soup:

You will need:

  • 3T Butter
  • 3T flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup dry, mushrooms, Or 1/2 cup sliced fresh mushrooms, Or small can of mushrooms.
  • 1/4 teas. celery powder
  • 1/4 teas. onion powder
  • 1/4 teas garlic powder
  • 1 teas. salt.

Recipe makes a little less than 2 cups.

Melt butter on medium heat, then stir in flour. Add in mushrooms and seasoning, stir well. (If you are using dried mushrooms, be sure to crumble them a bit.)

Pour milk over it all, turn heat to med-hi and stir until thick and bubbly.

For those of you who like to can, please allow me to warn you not to can this! When I was a teen my mom and I spent an entire day making and canning over 30 pints of this mushroom soup. We were exhausted at the end of the day but thrilled at the idea of having soup in jars so we could save a little time while making supper.

3 days later a horrible smell started coming from the pantry. Every one of the jars had burst their seal and the soup was foaming over the top. Physically sick by the smell and mentally sick over the wasted time and ingredients, we dumped everything and wondered where we went wrong. We didn’t have internet then, so it took a while to figure out what we did wrong. Apparently you cannot can milk and flour together because they will ferment.

Anyway, it only takes 5 minutes to make this, so having a can/jar ready made wasn’t that big of a time saver anyway. 🙂

I just bought mushrooms to make this b/c my dd requested it. So here is a good recipe to try.
I am so sorry about your canning mess; that is the kind of thing that makes you feel kind of sick inside after all the work and money. Well, it is a learning experience for sure.
