It was an interesting conversation; a self proclaimed prior Satanist and two plain Christian women. As we were leaving, his parting words to us, was to keep our heads covered.
My mom and I were at a christian bookstore, both of us wearing hoodies that claimed, “Eternally Free. John 3:16” when he walked up to us. I don’t remember what he looked like, other than his face was alive. He gestures to our hoodies and says “I am eternally free! Are you?” Mom and I both nod and look at him, his face lights up with a big smile and he asks us “do you know what it means to be free?!”
I don’t remember just how the whole conversation went, but at some point he was asked to share his testimony. The way he seemed alive, we just knew his had to be a good story. And it was.
He was a former Satanist, or Devil worshiper. His life was black and he didn’t even remember parts of it. He had a friend who kept trying to share the Word with him and he wasn’t interested. The friend kept pursuing him in though, and through Gods grace and love, this man found hope and salvation.
It’s been years, I wish I could remember the story better. I wish we could speak with him again. Remember in Luke where Jesus is referring to Mary? “Her sins which are many, are forgiven, therefore she loves much. But to whom little is forgiven, loveth little. This man who had been forgiven much, loved much. I can pretty much imagine him as one to “leap upon the housetops and shout it in the streets.”
One thing I remember him sharing was how he destroyed all of his satanic items. They were burned, and even the satanic bible burned to ashes. Unlike most books which merely smolder, with bits and pieces of the pages still intact; his satanic book burned until there was nothing left but ashes. Just like Satan himself will someday, burn forever.
We didn’t get to talk as long as we would’ve liked, I had to work that day which really rushed us out of there. We said our goodbyes, and his parting words were to keep our heads covered. Mom and I nod and we leave. But later we looked at each other and wondered…. What did that man, a man who had been part of the darkness, what did he know about the covering we wore?
In Corinthians Paul says the woman will have power over her head because of the Angels. In the spiritual realm, what does that mean? That is a conversation I will never forget. Even though I was already convicted of wearing a head-covering, our conversation with this man only further convicted me.
We will likely never know what this man knew, to admonish us in such a way. But I am content to know that in covering my head and honoring God’s plan of leadership, I am protected in a special way as his child.
wow kenrda, for sure that was an interesting story and encounter! It makes me wonder more about the important belief of wearing a head covering as a woman.
I would like to know where you purchase the top photo covering or any of them for that matter. I wear a formed covering and am desiring a more softer type covering. Glad for any help you can give. Thank you! Martha Meador
I’m sorry, I totally goofed and forgot to link the photo to Jane’s shop. It’s linked now, but here is where you go: http://www.etsy.com/shop/mennonitemom I hope that helps. I wear the shell also, and really dislike it. So at home I do wear something softer.
What an amazing story! Thank you for sharing this post.
I’m glad you stopped by. and thanks 🙂
Now this post I found very interesting! I wonder what more he would have had to say about being covered, and his remark about the Angels. I don’t think I’ve read any head covering testimonies from former devil worshipers. It has me curious!
Oh how we wished later that we would’ve asked him why he said that.
A post that leaves us all with a challenging question….what did he see that caused him to say that?
Thanks Kendra!
Oh wow….this has me thinking a lot actually. What a convicting post Kendra!!!
Very interesting…I would SO love to know what that man had “seen” or been told about women keeping their heads covered. This post kind of gives me the chills. It’s kind of creepy, eye opening straight into the heart of God, perhaps? I have been tempted different times to start wearing a head covering, and I think the main reason I changed my mind different times was because of what pastors had told me about that having been a different time with different customs. Also, the thought of everyone staring at me, and not being “accepting” of me. If, however, I had had a pastor that was my weekly pastor, preach for wearing a headband, that might just have been what took me “over the edge”. Man, if you had only had the time to really “pick his brain”, and find out what he had experienced, that would have been so valuable!
If you read all of 1 corinthians 11 you will see that it talks about communion…or the lords supper…so my question to you would be why would the first half of that chapter be for way back then…but somehow most churches do communion…if the first half of the chapter is outdated wouldn’t the rest of the Bible be outdated too…just something to think about…if we still do communion why shouldn’t we cover our heads too…you really can’t pick and chooses what is relevant in the Bible…either it’s all relevant or it’s not…period…
Now that’s blunt 🙂 So I have a question for you, What about feet-washing? We practice communion, what happened to washing each others feet?
Most churches I know do foot washing occasionally. The church I went to back home did it for Maundy Thursday (the Thursday before Easter, which would be the night of the Last Supper and also when the foot washing happened.) I also did it on a church retreat once (they had the leaders of the groups wash feet. It was very humbling and holy.) I don’t know about church here in India. It’s not done as commonly as Communion in most churches, but they often do it here and there.
this is the main reason I have considered wearing a covering – because of that statement about “for the angels”… very curious. I wish you would have asked him what he meant.
I wish we would’ve as well, but he said it in parting as one would say “God bless you” and we didn’t get the full impact of what he said until we had already driven away.
But we have always wondered just what he meant….
hmmm…I want to know more too! I have recently started wearing a covering when I am at church or with my church friends. I would like to wear it all the time, but my husband isn’t comfortable with the idea yet. My little girl really wants to wear her’s all the time, too. When I am not wearing it, I am usually wearing a large barrett or clip as a sort of compromise thanks to Jane’s suggestion. I would love to know more behind the conviction to wear it. 🙂 Thank you for sharing!
I have several friends who wear a very wide headband instead of a more formal covering.
I don’t want to be seem controversial but if we read on in 1 Corinthians 11 it says: “1 Corinthians 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.” Like in all cases the Bible defines itself and here the Lord says that the covering is the long hair. Often (not always) we can see women who chop of their hair have a problem with authority or are in an authoritative position….
Anyway, I think if you believe in wearing a head covering I like it the way you do it… wearing it all the time. That “only in church” or “when I am praying” business makes no sense. :)If I go to a church that wears head coverings… I’ll wear it. I respect this belief. I just wanted to know your thoughts were on the verse above. 🙂

Yes, it does say that. I believe you are quoting JKV, the word for, means “to be” but was translated as “for”.
I do agree with you on the all or none though. Not every one may feel that way and the point of me sharing
any of these posts is to cause people the think. I don’t wish to push my convictions onto others, but I want
you to think about your own convictions and to ask yourself why you believe the way you do. 🙂
Iris – It is an interesting study to look up the original Greek words for when it talks about a woman covering her head and when it says that her hair is given as a covering. I think you’ll find that the words, though both translated “covering” in English, are actually two different words. http://www.blueletterbible.org/ is a helpful website for looking up these things. Click on the “C” to the left of the verse. Hope this helps. 🙂
Hello! I left you a message on Facebook too. I stumbled across your blog on Picket Fences. I am surprised we haven’t crossed paths prior to this! I will be visiting often! This was an amazing encounter!

How fun is your blog? And twins? You are one busy lady!
Interesting.
I have been reading this with great interest. I also wear a shell covering. I would like to tell of an experience my husband had within the past 6 months. – He came into contact with a demon possesed girl who wears a covering. (Interesting, isn’t it! – That shows that the outer is not always what it looks like) When this girl would have an “attack”, she would go into a rage, rip her covering off, bite, kick the Bible, etc. My husband heard the demons speak several times. What they had to say was this “We left him in the tomb!” or “We hate that book!” (speaking to someone standing near with the Bible, she would try to kick it out of their hands) AND they also talked about the head covering. When she would take it off, and those near her would try to put it back on – the demons would say “We don’t like that thing!” and she would not let them put it back on.
I think I may know of whom you are talking about… 🙂
Even though it’s sad she went through that, I think it gave a lot of us something to really think about and consider.
…..I would encourage coverings to look like coverings. What I mean is this. Wear something that actually covers your head, so that when you are out and about, anyone can tell that you stand for something. Are we not to be a light to the world? STAND UP FOR JESUS! Do not be ashamed! After hearing what my husband saw,(above post) we want NOTHING to do with the devil and his activities. You know, I alway thought the devil was, well…bad right?! Well, what came out of this girls mouth was worse than anything you can think of. The devil is not only “bad”, but EVIL. He wants you, your children, friends, everyone. STAND UP FOR JESUS!!!!
Its so uplifting when you have a spiritual conversation from a complete stranger, he saw something in you that he felt a need to tell you about it.. I believe God works that way. 🙂
God works in wondrous ways does he not? 🙂
His story had to be so interesting!!
I love running into people like that in public. I bet his story was interesting. What a great post about your choice of covering.
That’s a very interesting story! It’s amazing what God can do in a person’s life when we give Him the chance! Praise God for this man’s conversion! I too wonder what he meant by that comment. I’ve never really understood the biblical purpose of the head covering practice. I’d like to know more.
Blessings,
Rubi

Yes, the power of God is amazing and humbling.
Eternally free. It’s the gift that keeps on giving. What a blessing that you had the encounter with the man, and that it still affects you today and that the Lord brought you to share it here. I love how God works in our lives, not only in the moment, but through past encounters and in hope for the future.
So true.. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
Such an interesting story! I love when God uses other believers to speak things into my life. Thank you for sharing this with us.
This is a very interesting story! What a testimony he must have had! Thank you for sharing and linking up at Simply Helping Him! Blessings sis!
I found you through this weeks Titus 2 link up. This gave me the chills. Thank you for inspiring me to do some more research, both with in scripture and in my heart.
Inspire was my intention 🙂
I buy some covers, but I also make my own.
I wear from bandannas ,and head bands like this one
http://thesimplelife2015.blogspot.com/2012/11/new-headbands.html

Bandannas are my favorite, to be honest 🙂
I do to, they come in such pretty colors, and patterns..
Mine DH went ,and bought me some for a surprise.
Him,and my son prefer them to the white ones
Such an interesting post – thank you for sharing. About a year and a half ago I asked God to show me the “why” behind the head covering, and I had no idea the amazing and beautiful journey I was starting. I am almost finished writing my book on the subject. I have prayerfully written it, earnestly trying to keep out of it any tradition or man-made opinions, and to only include scripture as my basis. This whole process has brought me closer to God than I could’ve imagined it would. I feel so blessed to be able to cover my head now, whereas before I felt it was simply my duty. I am hoping that this book would help women from all denominations to see the beauty in the covering. Do you have any books you refer to that teach on the head covering? Would this book be of interest to anyone?
I do have one somewhere. Its the same one that Jane (Mennonite momma) gives out with any coverings she sells. If your book is on Amazon I could add it to the books I recommend widget I have on my page.
That would be wonderful. Thank you. I would be interested to know which book Jane hands out with the coverings if you have a chance to let me know in the future. Thanks again.

Yes I would be interested in your book Moira. I’ve been studying and collecting books for several months now. I have a pretty thick notebook of notes. I belong to a church where the women all cover and have covered for several years (same as Kendra). I wanted to reinforce this better in my mind is why I am studying it more. I am becoming even more convicted all the time. The book I’ve recently read is Demons in the Church by Ellis Skolfield. He is in his 80’s and this 166 page book makes it stronger than even any of the Anabaptist groups or their writings. The book is out of print, so the cheapest you can buy is $39.95 on Amazon. However he has now put it on internet and it can be read for free. Just google the title/author and scroll down until you find “read it free”. After reading this book, I am honestly very scared NOT to cover. It is a manifestation of God’s order of authority in creation. It’s no wonder to me that satan nor his demons want us wearing this. It tells that we believe what God did and said and no one in the world wants to be reminded. Another good writing is from Scroll Publishing…Glories Seen and Unseen. Why would we want to let OUR glory show instead of God’s? There are a whole host of reasons when you really think and study on these things.

Thank you got your response! I didn’t see it until now – when Jane responded with the title of the book. (Thank you, Jane!) I am actually acquainted with the author of Glories See and Unseen. My manuscript is currently with an editor and I am awaiting her comments as to the next step. Book writing takes time, but God’s timing is always perfect and I am learning more about Him and His truth in the process. Thank you for your encouragement. I will keep you posted!
Hey Kendra,
Today I went out shopping and praying without my head covered (it just hadn’t occurred to me) and I very suddenly felt an awareness of my uncovered head and shame when I realized I hadn’t even given it a thought. I came home and put on a snood and realized I need to sit my husband down and talk to him about 1 Corinthians 11. I know I told you before that he had said no when I brought it up some time ago, before we married. Now reading this, I wonder if that that sudden feeling was because something spiritual was happening and the Spirit was warning me by making me aware of my lack of covering. I’ll be showing my husband this and we’ll pray about it. Thanks and I’ll let you know how it goes.
I, too, have been recently convicted by the Lord to wear a headcovering during “prayer and prophesying” (1 Corinthians 11:5) as He has brought me on the path of my mission in Christ. Thank you for sharing. Shalom, Sister in Christ, and God be with you.
