How about another natural homemaking hack y’all? Want a natural stainless steel polish that you probably already have in your home?
I personally dislike stainless steel. It seems to show far more than a white appliance does unless you buy the smear free kind. (way to much $$ for us!) Anyway, some how or the other we ended up with a couple stainless appliances and try as I might, I couldn’t get them shiny. I could get them clean but the water marks were horrible.
Because of my chemical sensitivities, I don’t like having chemical cleaners in our house, but when I was cleaning houses I had to admire how pretty the stainless looked after I polished it. But the smell was still enough to discourage me from using the stuff at our house.
I would like to say I tried a lot of different things and did a lot of experimentation to find a natural stainless steel polish. But the truth is, the first thing I tried was a great success! 🙂
You start with something that looks a bit like my dishwasher. 🙂
There is milk dripped down the front (don’t ask) along with all sorts of other messes.
The first thing you do is use a rag and hot water to clean the stainless steel. After all, you don’t want to polish dirt!
Next, I call up my three friends: A flannel rag, coconut oil, and a bit of good old fashioned elbow grease.
Just apply the coconut oil to your rag and start rubbing. The oil will soak in a bit so you will need more. Once you have “oiled” the entire surface, flip your rag over to the dry side and start polishing. I use circular movements to polish with.
The whole process only takes a few minutes and the result is wonderfully shiny stainless steel. The first time I polished my dishwasher this way, I was so tickled at how good it looked. 🙂 We bought it at an outlet store, so it never “looked like new” to begin with.
So, there’s your natural stainless steel polish. Enjoy being able to get rid of one more no longer needed chemical cleaner!
Note: You could probably use other oils, but I went with coconut because it is a “cleaner” oil than some. It’s smoother and not super greasy.
I love natural cleaners. Who knew coconut oil had so many uses?
But I am trying not to laugh my head off right now (cause there are sleeping humans and dogs around me). When I saw the blog title, I thought you were talking about a silvery metallic nail polish! *ROFL*
I used olive oil. Worked great 🙂 just in case you’re out of coconut oil or don’t have any in your house.
I figured it would work fine 🙂 Thanks for letting us know!
Hi, I’m a fellow blogger…I always love to bump into others who love to write and share their thoughts.I know there’s a lot of ladies out there that are making their own non toxic cleaners. But are you all aware that there is a great 25+ year old company out there that makes wonderful non toxic cleaners that also has a compensation plan where you can earn enough to get your products totally free…or more if you want? You can email me if you want more info. schrocksd@gmail.com Your also welcome to visit my blog if you like:)
I can just see my 2 dogs loving to lick my dishwasher front!!!
My 2 dogs would love to clean my dishwasher front for sure with the coconut or any other oil !!!
Haha! I’m sure they would 🙂
Nice work – almost all home-grade stainless steel appliances are NOT stainless steel, they are marketed as “stainless steel finish” which is brushed aluminum with a clearcoat, so do NOT use stainless steel cleaner.
