While on vacation we like to experience new things. One was the the time we went sailing in Key West. The other thing we really enjoyed was snorkeling but I could share photos of that.
Sooo, we went sailing. Not once, or even twice, but three times! Admittedly there was a “frequent sail” program that make the second trip cheaper and the third one free, but still, we really enjoyed it. Enough that I am designating a whole post to our sailing adventures!
The interesting thing about sailing in Key West (or anywhere for that matter) is you personally cannot take a photo of the ship you are sailing on, because the sails don’t go up until you get out of the harbor. So I am going to send you here to get a good look at how super cool this schooner is!
The boat was called the Jolly ll Rover and it’s a pirate schooner. Complete with the skull and crossbones flag and a black powder cannon that we shot at various beaches and ships. 🙂
The first time we went out we went during the day and looked for sea turtles and dolphins. Sadly we saw neither that time, but we still had fun. They let the passengers help with hoist the sails and even let us steer the ship with a bit of supervision!
A sailboat race was happening that day and when we were coming back in, all these fast little sailboats were flying, err sailing right past us!
The second time, we went out on a moonlight sail. The moon was full and we didn’t have lights (other than clearance) at all and you could see quite well. Most of the photos from that sail didn’t turn out to well, but the last one is awesome!
And finally, our last day in the keys we went out on a 6 hour cruise (where I got totally burnt) and after that, we went out one last time for a sunset sail.
The water was really rough that day and the sun actually set behind the clouds, but slid between the clouds and the water right at the last. This was the time we also saw about 5 dolphins swimming around and they came up to the boat. But due to the roughness of the waves, I didn’t get very many good shots.
So, between snorkeling and sailing, I’m not really sure which was my favorite experience. But they were both great. Now tell me, have you ever been sailing before? Did you love it?
I love the keys! I’ll live there one day.
Hubby and I thought it would be fun to go down there in te winter and get jobs 🙂
I have never been but you made it look so much fun I just may have to try it
You do need to try it sometime when you get the chance. There is something pretty cool about sailing, you feel a bit more “one” with the water.
Love it! I have always wanted to see what it was like to be a “Sailor” haha. A moonlit sailboat ride- now that is romantic! Cool photos too.
Just went sailing and snorkeling for the first time this week! Just got back from Puerto Rico. FUN!!
SO COOL.
Oh my goodness I would LOVE to do something like that. The water is so blue and gorgeous. Sigh. I pretty much live as far from Florida as possible in Canada, hehe
