Weekend in Holmes County

I’m not usually one to just dump a ton of photos on my readers. However, in this case I am going to do just that. 🙂
We went to Holmes County on Saturday with hubby’s grandparents and youngest brother. Now for those of you who don’t know, Holmes county Ohio is Amish country.

Lots to do and see up there. 🙂

We started out by going to Warther Musium in Dover Ohio. Basically this Ernest Warther was an excellent carver who was fascinated with trains. (In a nut shell)

It seems unbelievable, but all of these trains were hand carved from ebony and ivory, hundreds of       pieces and crazy attention to detail.

We went through a restored part of their home and saw his wife’s button collection. There was a whole room filled with these designs.

Out back was a steam engine and caboose, where we had fun with photo opps.

Ok, so do you think we had fun? Lol!

Speaking of fun, Jason and Sheldon are 10 years apart in age, oldest and youngest. But mom says they are twins 10 years apart. What do you think?

Crazy Brothers!

After absolutely stuffing ourselves at an Amish diner, Gramps decides he wants to go to this Amish market in the next town over. Well I am driving and they don’t know how to get me there. Then there is the conversation that they will probably be closed by the time we get there and maybe we should stay in where we were to do some things.

So while that conversation/argument is going on, I’m still driving! I turn a corner and there is a huge Amish market with some other stores as well.

Good thing that van could stop and turn on a dime! I pulled in, parked, turned around and asked “will this work?” lol!

Really cool place though. There was huge barn type of petting zoo. I think I was in there for an hour, just loving on all those animals.

This horse was huge! As you can see by how little I look next to it.

Sorry, for the photo dump, (trust me, I didn’t even share 1/4 of them) but if you are reading this, then maybe, just maybe, you enjoyed it. 🙂

I have been known to link up to these totally cool and awesome linky parties! Why don’t you see which ones you can link up with today?

oh, wow 😉 we used to visit the Amish Country in Lancaster, PA…
I really like what that woman did with her button collection-she turned it into a craft instead of a junk pile-and I can’t believe how intricate the designs are…and though I’m not a big train fan, I love how intricate (can I use the same word twice??) those are too-I admire the detail & time that it took to make those…

beautiful horse! We have an amish community here, well about 10 miles north west of town (and another one roughly 30 miles south). They both have been there about 6 years I think. Most Kansas communities are a single church district, except the one NW me and as of 2010, it has grown to 2 church districts in size. Interesting enough they don’t have the traditional amish buggies, they have open wagons they use year around.

thats interesting, i thought that grpup had been there longer than that. and yeah, if they drove covered buggies they would be shunned from that group, something to do with their version of doctrine.

I have seen a couple covered buggies sitting in yards. Never seen one driven to town though. They are an interesting group, that I can say for sure. LOL! It’s interesting how the groups are all so alike yet different. I think I would fit in pretty well with their lifestyle if I had the chance. That’s my idea of a reality TV show. I KNOW I could do it and survive and win, etc. 🙂

Looks like lots of cool things to see!!! SO random fact… My dad went through a draft horse phase… We have a Percheron horse named Pete that pulls a fun little buggy and a few Belgian horses at his place. 🙂

I wonder how far we are from Holmes County? We always go to a place called “Saudersville” in Archibold, OH. That is pretty close to where we live and your pics reminded me of the fun the family used to have at that village 🙂

How funny that I stumbled upon your blog! My husband and I visited Ohio Amish Country and the Warther Museum just a few months back! We stayed overnight at the Hasseman House B & B. A lovely, Christian couple and their daughters run it! 🙂

I grew up in Barberton Ohio, we were about an hour from Holmes County. The trips we took to Amish country were some of my favorites. The food is always amazing. The crafts wonderful. And the people lovely. Thanks for bringing back some childhood memories for me. I loved every picture and wished you had posted more.

I glad you enjoyed the photos Melissa 🙂 I didn’t post more because I know from experience that more than 15 gets boring and I don’t ever want to bore my readers.
It’s so cool that you were able to visit as a kid! We live 4 hrs away and I had never been before.
