Changing out the bedroom decor
With the coming of winter I changed the quilts and covers on our bed. That also meant changing curtains and decor because the summer quilt is browns and reds while the winter one is tan and green. For winter I always add a little plum to bring in some color.
I had to take down my red and brown store bought decor box, and started looking for something to replace them. I forget what I used before, and buying boxes that I would only use for decor seemed silly. (The others were gifts) So I decided to make make my own.
How to make a decor box:
It’s really easy to make your own decor box. You need a box (or two) the size that you would like the finished product to be, paper, tape and anything else you would like to use to decorate the box with.
I found two boxes that were the same size, put together they were perfect. So I taped them together like this. Yeah, that’s painting tape, seems like that was all I had available to me at the moment. 😉
I used scrapbook paper to cover mine with. The only thing to watch out for it make sure you have enough paper, I just barely had enough to cover the front, top and side, with a little left over to make a fake flap with.
The paper had a bit more plum to it than this photo shows, but what can I say? Cheap camera and no editing skills. LOL!
I carefully covered the ends first, cutting the paper just big enough to have about an inch to wrap around the edges.
Next, wrap the front and top of the box, the back and bottom will not be seen, so it’s just as well I didn’t have enough paper to cover it.
Hehe, just realized this photo shows a messy background. 😉 Oh well. I’m real, folks, what else can I say?
Next, I took the remaining paper and cut a triangle to make a fake flap. make it the width of the front of the box, and make sure there is a small section that can be taped to the top of the box. I used the contrasting paper to wrap the edges of the fake flap. Then extended the side pieces, giving it a look of a full lid that lifts up. (Hopefully I’m making sense here)
Put the fake flap on top of your decor box. Tada!
You can see that the side flaps do not go clear to the back, but for my project, it’s ok, because when I put the box where it belongs, you cannot tell.
So, here is what the top of my chest looks like now (I did finally get a photo in that frame).
See, you cannot tell that the box isn’t anything but perfectly covered and even store bought! The only downfall, is the paper will likely fade after awhile. But anyway, it’s really easy to create decor boxes; after all, free is always best! 😉
What a neat idea! Gives your tablescape some height. Thanks for sharing this idea. I’m going to tweet it now!! Have a lovely day.
Thanks! I love adding dimension to my tablescapes 🙂
Your tutorial is perfectly easy to follow! I am pinning this to have when I do up the hutch for Christmas! I’d love it if you shared this at my party going on now at http://www.kathewithane.com
Certainly!
I like that it added height to the decor as well. When I used to work in a catering business, we did tablescapes for parties, and they always had us add height by placing boxes or what not underneath the linens. Cute!
Cute Kendra! Very cute!
What a beautiful box. I love how you added the front flap, it totally takes it to the next level. I love how you decorated around it too, that looks so pretty,
Thanks Alli, I like the fake flap too 🙂
Awesome idea! I love the little flap in the front, and the edging in a different color. 🙂
Thanks for sharing at The Fun In Functional!
Nice!
This is a great idea!
Cool idea! 🙂
