Priorities. Are they According to God’s Plans, or Mine?

Do you ever feel like your priorities get messed up? I know I do.

Where are my priorities?

Are your priorities according to God’s plans?

Last year when I started this site, I had a vision. To encourage and inspire christian homemakers.  It was a Godly vision and it became the mission of this blog.

But somewhere along the line, my priorities got screwed up a bit. In my goal to achieve this vision for A Proverbs 31 Wife. I missed my first vision and calling as a wife and homemaker.

There were days when I got very little done around the house. Nights when supper was late, and long after Jason was in bed and asleep, I’m still up, typing away. My priorities were a bit skewed, instead of focusing first on my calling as a wife and homemaker, and then working here. I had nearly put my first calling clear at the bottom of my priorities.

It’s easy to do that. Get an idea in your head, even an idea that God has planted there; and be so excited about it, that you completely neglect everything else.  I love this mission here.  Sharing homemaking tips, lessons I’ve learned as a wife, and everything else that goes up here. Writing has always been something I’ve enjoyed.  But if my writing is taking away from my position as a wife and homemaker, am I really qualified to write here? You know, it would be like the blind leading the blind!

Sometimes it’s good to sit back a bit and look at yourself.  Just like we women don’t like to look in the mirror at our physical self, we also dislike looking inwards at our spiritual self.  Some-times what we see, just isn’t at all what we should see.

In Corinthians Paul talks about examining ones self.  In the context there, we are to examine ourselves before approaching the Lord’s table (communion). But as Christians, our daily walk should also be examined. Like David says “Search me O God, and Know my heart, try me and know my thoughts”.

Sometimes we need to step back from where we are at and ask the Lord to search our hearts, and we need to examine ourselves.  Look at where we are, and where we are going. Sometimes, we just need to just take a few steps, other times we have to completely turn around. And sometimes, we are right where God needs us to be.

For me, I needed to start saying “no”. Sure it’s a good topic to share, sure it would encourage some-one. Sure, it’s a great recipe/story/craft, but if it’s taking away from family, then I need to say no.

So, at times, I may not post much. If I can be spending time with hubby, then that’s where I need to be. If there is stuff to do around the house, then that’s what I need to do. And most of all, I really need to put God back into the center of my life.

And that’s my priorities. God, Family, and then this ministry.

I understand! I get the same way sometimes. It’s easy to get caught up in our passions. Do your thing and post when you can. I am sure all of your readers will understand!

Thank you so much for this message. I am glad you are learning this early on in life. It is all so very true, and even us older grandma’s need to be reminded at times. God bless you in this decision and know it is truly the Right one to make!

I think it’s something we have to relearn a lot. To just step back and look at where we are. To realize it’s ok, if we are not doing what every one else is. When we can just take one day at a time and follow where God leads, then we will find ourselves back on track.

yep, facebook and blogs definitely can sometimes eat up too much of my time….it’s so hard isn’t it? Because I do think it is important for everyone to have a bit of “me” time also. I will read and enjoy whenever you post ~ although I do go through spurts where I don’t read at all, because I know if I do, stuff that needs to be done just is less likely to actually be accomplished. At least we are all struggling with the same issues – that brings me comfort!

Yeah, most of my time doesn’t get ate up by the actual blogging, but by reading other blogs and various forms of Social Media. “Me” time is important, but I have always tried to go by the old adage of work before play. 🙂

The temptation to be occupied with internet or other hobbies, etc. is always among us; especially when we get that overwhelmed feeling of burn out when our duties are in high demand. Great topic as I can relate. Being mindful of the order you’ve put things in really helps, especially when one sees it written in front of them:-)
    Thank you!

Yes, it’s so easy to be occupied with hobbies rather than be where we should at times!

Amen! Right now I am posting five days a week. In order to do that I have had to give up a lot of my blog reading and commenting time. I love reading decorating blogs but I just don’t have the time right now. So you do have to have a balance.

One problem I had was the learning curve. When I learned how to do graphics on photos and stuff I had to spend some time learning how to do it. It wasn’t hard but it still took awhile until I got comfortable with everything. Learning how to make a blog button took awhile too.

Every time I learn something new it seems to take awhile, lol!

Thanks for linking up to the “Making Your Home Sing Monday” linky party today! 🙂

I struggle with the balance between blogging and my roles as wife, SAHM and homemaker. I love blogging and it takes so much work and time to get established. Yet, I pray that God will keep me mindful of my responsibilities and the important moments when I can just hang out with my family. Prioritising isn’t always easy but so important.

Kendra, you hit the proverbial “nail on the head” with this post. I had been heading in that direction for awhile, and not feeling so good about what I was doing. I actually have meant to put a blog post in about it, to let people know why I have “disappeared”. I haven’t put a blog post up in about a month now. It had been feeling all wrong for awhile. I was neglecting other areas in my life, and wasn’t giving my daughter and my husband the time they deserved. Thanks for getting it out there. And thanks for the honesty. It’s truly appreciated!

I wondered if you got spring fever over there. 🙂 It’s pretty important to keep an eye on our priorities, and while I’m still here, it’s just not as much at times. If I cannot get 5 posts a week cranked out, well, I’m not going to worry about it. If God wants to use this site, then he will, but I don’t have to fret, if I chose to spend time with hubby and now don’t have a post for the next day. 🙂

Differing seasons – that’s the key to priorities. What would be considered wasted time in one season is required attention in another. Thanks for the reminder!

Very good point, “differing seasons” I will have to keep that in mind.

I just wanted to add that your post really convicted me, Kendra. But in the opposite direction from where you were prompted to write – because God can use your writing no matter the stage of the reader…

My time with my kids is done. They’re adults, grown and gone. My focus is no longer on homeschooling and attending to the needs and requirements of children at home and a husband who works outside of the home, traveling and rarely with me. However it’s easy to stay “stuck” in the season of only paying attention to husband and home and kids… because that’s what is comfortable after 28 years… (laziness, procrastination, & comfort taking over and making me NOT work on what I’m called to do! )

You’re so right. No matter where we are – in a season – we need to keep our actions tied to God’s priorities…

I struggle with this too. Right now, I’m really working at figuring out a good blogging schedule that works for my family so that I can avoid this pitfall. It’s tough, and I think it will always be a challenge for me.

I struggle with finding balance… You are not alone. I’ve recently started my own little blog: http://myblessedlife2002.wordpress.com/

I try to mainly write during my toddler’s afternoon naps which is also when I need to clean… Like right now! I found you through the time warp wife link up. I enjoyed your post. Now, I better go finish my devotional from this morning (was interrupted), clean some, and maybe work on my blog! 😉

There have been times when I’ve been doing something and realized that it wasn’t what God wanted me to do. I’d justify it and say “well, if God hadn’t wanted me to do this, the opportunity wouldn’t have been there.” But then I realize sometimes the lesson is learning to say no to things.

This blogging thing is definitely addictive. It’s taken me a while to get a grip on what to get involved in and what to leave alone. I think I have the balance a little better now, but it was touch and go there for a while.
